Social bookmark link generator

Posted by Michael Bloch in web marketing (Sunday September 3, 2006 )

Social bookmarking services such as Furl and Digg can send a lot of traffic your way; and it’s common for bloggers and article publishers to include special links to make bookmarking for these services easier. But what if you can’t use plugins, server side scripting or javascript to automate the task?

This new generator may help..

I’ve just published up my latest creation, a social bookmarking link generator. Let’s just say it’s in beta, pre-release, v1 or other similar disclaimers people use when releasing something that hasn’t been tested 2,000 times :).

It’s really easy to use and you can create icon/text, text, or just icon based social bookmarking links for Furl, Technorati, Digg, Yahoo, Google and a few others. That’s just for starters – I’ll add more services if there’s any interest.

Here’s an example of the icon-only option based on this post:

add to furl add to add to technorati add to blinklist add to digg add to google add to stumbleupon add to yahoo

To use the generator, you just enter the social bookmarking service icon folder URL (optional – I have icons you can download), the URL of your post and the title and then hit submit. The generated code; which is easy to edit if you find the need, can then be copy and pasted at the end of your post or articles.

The generator is particularly handy for using with static sites and social networking services such as MySpace where javascript isn’t permitted and server side scripting isn’t supported.

Looking forward to feedback, suggestions and … umm.. any bug reports :).

  1. Blinklist code has been fixed – Thanks to Rick from DevNIC for the heads up.

  2. Michael,

Placed your codes in my landing page (see above) and signed up to all 7 store sites.
Clicking on the code links works fine except for Furl. After inserting username, pw and pressing Login, up comes my landing page and not the bookmark suggestion page.
What is your experience with Furl?

Here are two of those code insertions:

  3. Hey Herward,

Sorry, I fell asleep at the blog comments wheel :). I just tried the Furl link you have above and it worked fine for me, but I was already logged in. Most social bookmark service users tend to stay “logged in” so to speak via a cookie that’s placed on their system. I will look into this further though to see if there’s a way to carry over the details if a user isn’t logged in.

  4. Hi again Herward, Thanks again for flagging the Furl issue and your suggestion about adding StumbleUpon. I believe I have sorted out the Furl problem and I’ve also added support for StumbleUpon, including adding a relevant icon to the icon download pack:

  5. Greetings,
Suggestion – How about adding code to make an “Add bookmark to your browser” (or some other wording to that effect) to the list? It makes sense to me to have the old-school bookmark method there too. Does that make sense? Is it easily do-able?

  6. Hi Patrick, nice site :) – I’m a big believer in green business.

I should be able to get that into the generator pretty easily; but it may take me a little while to get to it. In the meantime, if you’re looking for a simple bookmarking script that’s easy to implement, I have one here (the script is below the section regarding creating favorites icons):

  7. Thanks Michael. If I’d have spent a few minutes looking around before commenting, I would have found your other scripts that do that – “add to favorites”. I appreciate your site as well, the direction, and the kind words!
