Do you like to watch?

Posted by Michael Bloch in web development (Wednesday October 3, 2007 )

I’m just curious about what readers of Taming the prefer. Do you prefer to watch video or to read articles?

To put this question a little more in context – I was just visiting a news site and practically all the top stories were video reports. There’s the wait while the video is buffering, then the pre-roll video ad, then the story starts. By that time I usually would have scanned the news item had it been in text and gained from it what I wanted. Even a lengthy news item I prefer to be in text.

I notice quite a few involved in the web development, marketing and ecommerce news/tips scene also using video increasingly – often it’s just a talking head saying what they would have previously written. It’s a nice personal touch, but again, I find it a little inconvenient.

While I do watch my share of online video it’s usually items I specifically seek out. I like to surf in silence throughout the working day and I prefer my industry and general news in text – but then again I’ve enjoyed reading since a very young age.

What about you? What format do you generally prefer when accessing news or tips related to the online industry – text (with images where appropriate) or video?

  1. Hi Michael,

I have to agree with you on this one. Video is great for content that needs video. (screencasts, lectures, skateboarding dogs)

But for everything else, text is just quicker & easier.

  2. Well, 24 hours later and the results are in – it seems 100% of TTB readers who responded prefer text! I knew I was right ;). Thanks for your comment Starr, btw, I like your new blog – best of luck with it!
