Screen resolution statistics – July 07

Posted by Michael Bloch in web development (Thursday July 5, 2007 )

After finding yet another one of my favorite sites changing their design to suit 1024×768 screen resolution and higher, I thought it was time to check out some statistics on what monitor resolution most folks are running these days and whether 800×600 is still rapidly being dropped as the resolution of choice.

I’m really getting tired of horizontal scrolling, but with the increasing number of sites switching to “wide screen” layouts, it looks like my attempts at continuing to run 800×600 are becoming futile. I’m definitely becoming marginalized :).

Based on 60,000 visits to Taming the Beast.net over recent days here’s how the statistics stack up:

Late June/ early July 2007

1 – 47.39% – 1024×768
2 – 13.40% – 1280×1024
3 – 11.16% – 1280×800
4 – 8.63% – 800×600
5 – 3.75% – unknown
6 – 3.67% – 1440×900
7 – 3.51% – 1152×864
8 – 2.12% – 1680×1050
9 – 1.79% – 1280×768
10 – 0.72% – 1280×960

… and then sundry other weird and wonderful resolutions.

Statistics I looked at for a few non-tech sites I’m involved with show similar types of figures.

When last I checked in late January, 800×600 resolution was at 10.88% of users, in September 2006, it was around 12.76%. So there’s been quite a substantial drop in under a year.

Way back in February 2001, 800×600 was running on 55% of users’ systems.

640×480 resolution, bless it, is still (barely) hanging around at around 0.07% of users :).

I still believe that sites who don’t cater to 800×600 users are losing ad cash and advertisers losing potential customers as advertising is often placed in a right hand column – which isn’t viewable for the most part when running 800×600. Still, it’s definitely becoming less of an issue as the months roll by and by the end of 2007 I guess I won’t be mentioning it any more :).

RIP 800×600
