Outsourcing and ISO accreditation? Pffft.

Posted by Michael Bloch in web development (Monday December 15, 2008 )

Considering outsourcing online work to a design company or services provider? Are they touting ISO accreditation? Yawn.

Accreditation standards are a funny thing. They are a nice concept, but don’t really work too well in the real world.

I once worked in an organization that was aiming for a rather prestiguous accreditation and what they did on the day of the monitoring visit was to move in a ton of shiny new equipment, then move it out when the inspection had finished to send it to the next branch due for the same.

If you’re in the market for online services and the company is showcasing their ISO accreditation, certainly don’t see it as the be all and end all. I’ve experienced this first-hand in online services, when the accredited company may have performed to standard on the day (or whatever the monitoring period was), but they certainly didn’t have anything over a non-accredited competitor in normal day to day operations. In fact, they were totally incompetent.

You’ll likely see the accreditation grandstanding with overseas companies competing in the field of outsourcing services such as web development, sales or customer support; particularly companies based in India.

I’m not saying that Indian web companies are terrible, there are some great ones around staffed by wonderful and very competent people; but don’t base your decision on any company’s ISO accreditation spiel – in fact, totally ignore it; it really is that meaningless in my opinion. It’s a case of the many having spoiled it for the few.
