Mobile sites – time has come?

Posted by Michael Bloch in web development (Wednesday October 1, 2008 )

For years, having versions of our web sites for handheld devices such as cell phones and mobile commerce (MCommerce) have been The Next Big Thing that site owners have been told they prepare for. Perhaps we finally will need to soon.

Some interesting data from ComScore shows a marked increase from last year in relation to users accessing mobile search at least once a week.

France + 69%
Germany + 37%
Italy + 42%
Spain + 63%
United Kingdom + 53%
Europe + 50%
United States + 104%

So, if they are searching, they are then going somewhere from there.

Depending on your target market, it might be time to start offering a mobile optimized version of your site. It could be something as simple as creating a couple of decks using WML, or perhaps using a service that allows you to create a mobile site for free, or going as far as using web page building software than can also automatically create a mobile optimized version of your site.

I’ve had my 3G phone for months now and still haven’t cruised the web on it.. guess I should give it a go to see what all the fuss is about… but where do I plug in the mouse? ;).
