How many sites do you visit?

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Thursday March 13, 2008 )

In this increasingly online world, we’re consuming an incredible amount of media. I had quite a shock after checking some stats on how many sites I visit each day.

On a fairly average day, I’ll visit 170 different sites, which probably goes some way to explaining the jumbled dreams I have and my increasing passion for staring at trees or blank walls for extended periods :).

In 2005, American consumers were being indundated with anything from 3,500 to 5,000 marketing messages per day. Back in the 1970’s it was only (?) 500 to 2,000 according to J. Walker Smith from consumer and marketing watcher Yankelovich. I would hate to think how much that figure has grown to today and on the flip side of things as marketers, it’s no wonder it’s getting harder to attract people’s attention.

I often wonder whether we’ll hit critical mass when it comes to advertising – a bit like an allergic reaction to a drug that occurs through overuse. Using the drug metaphor, we’ve certainly hit the tolerance stage, whereby it takes more of a substance to create a desired effect. I look back at the advertising of the 50’s and 60’s and often think how cute and child-like it was.

Anyhoo, our link following forays can really cause time management issues. The quick trip to see the latest Dilbert strip can turn into a journey into all sorts of realms through various distractions and before you know it; the day’s nearly over with you left wondering what the hell happened :)
