Steve Ballmer on parenting

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Saturday April 1, 2006 )

If you’ve read my newsletters etc. for a while, you’d know that I’m a bit of a Steve Ballmer fan – and that has nothing to do with Microsoft. It wouldn’t matter what company he was representing; I just admire the guy’s energy and charisma.

It’s a difficult job to inject enthusiasm into a team at times, but Steve seems to have that special gift that many of us who manage others in a technological pressure cooker environment can learn from.

I’m not one to buy motivational books, but if Steve wrote a manual, I’d buy it :). Seeing him run around a stage like a chook with its head cut off – or yelling “Developers, Developers, Developers!“; or perhaps “I love this company!!!” – it makes me smile every time.

Sure, he may have a temper at times (especially if it’s related to the “G” word) and perhaps he is a heart attack waiting to happen; but you have to admire his passion, his intestinal fortitude and his ability to put a positive spin on a sucky situation.

I was reading a recent interview with Steve Ballmer on CNN/Money – it was the usual blah blah blah, but he came out with this little gem in regards to what he’s taught his kids:

“You don’t use Google, and you don’t use an iPod.”

Bless you Steve, may you remain a shining star in what can be a dull universe at times :).
