Monitor spiders

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Wednesday March 22, 2006 )

I don’t know what it is about my computer equipment that attracts arachnids, but I seem to have as many dealings lately with the large 8 legged variety as I do with search engine spiders.

Several months ago, I published up a photo of a Huntsman spider that wanted to duke it out for ownership of my notebook. That pic was taken in the outback.

Back in the safety of suburbia, I ran into one of his cousins :). That’s a 17 inch monitor he’s sitting on, so yep, he was pretty big and not too happy with the attention. His fate unfortunately was the same as that of his bush cuzz – my family isn’t really keen on these critters.

Unlike North America, we don’t have large, dangerous creatures here in Australia, aside from humans. We just have small, creepy crawly poisonous ones.

I have seen these guys attack small birds, and while I’m told that a bite from a Huntsman isn’t deadly, just painful, I don’t go out of my way to be overly friendly with them. They mainly come out at night and like to roam… brr.. a nice bedtime thought :).
