Social networks are in the toilet

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Monday January 24, 2011 )

Literally. Even the sanctity of the bathroom is no match for the power of social networking, with 27% of people in a recent survey stating they check Facebook while in the bathroom.

AIS Media conducted a survey of 500 people in the U.S. in January and arrived at that result. It also seems that females are more likely to access Facebook while in the bathroom than males – 54.4% vs. 45.6%. The age group most likely to engage in this activity are not the teens or 20-somethings – it’s the 30-49 age bracket.

So, if you’ve ever had any doubt about Facebook’s reach; I think it’s pretty clear it’s now accessed from pretty much everywhere and it’s time to get cranking on a Facebook page for your business if you don’t already have one.

Just as a side note – it appears that quite a few people don’t like discussing their bathroom habits. Of a total of 2,381 calls, 500 completed the survey. 764 of those contacted did not finish the survey and 866 refused to participate in the survey :).

I wonder how many people access Facebook while attending church?

It’s hard to believe that Facebook only launched in 2004. I was just looking at Facebook’s statistics page (not sure how old the data is) and it says Facebook has more than 500 million active users and 50% of those active users log on to Facebook in any given day. People clock up over 700 billion minutes per month on Facebook – that’s over 1.3 million years, or based on an average human lifespan of 75 years, over 17,500 human lifetimes each month.

Amazing.. and a little disturbing :)
