Thank you Akismet!

Posted by Michael Bloch in online world (Tuesday May 29, 2007 )

Somewhat of a milestone was passed on this blog today. When I logged into my WordPress admin interface, Akismet, the anti-spam plugin, announced to me: “Akismet has protected your site from 100,142 spam comments”

The Akismet anti-spam plugin for blogs was originally developed for WordPress, but is now also compatible with many other publishing platforms such as phpBB, Movable Type, Drupal and more. It works quietly in the background and is basically set and forget. Akismet has intercepted a total of over 1.5 billion spam posts since the service began.

I only started using Akismet in early October 2006 when the level of spam hitting this blog was really starting to drive me nuts – so my stats work out to:

100,142 divided by 239 days = ~ 418 spam comments a day Akismet is preventing from hitting my humble blog. 418 pieces of crud I don’t even have to see. Seeing spam in my moderation queue is very rare now and I haven’t had any issues that I know of relating to false positives; i.e. legitimate comments being filtered out.

If you haven’t enabled the Akismet plugin for your WordPress blog as yet, I highly recommend that you do. If the spambots haven’t found you yet, it’s only a matter of time.

If you’re using WordPress v2 or higher, Akismet will already be in your plugins section, but will need activating. In order to activate, it requires gaining a API key; which is a quick and easy process. The plugin is free to use, but for blogs generating over $500/mo in revenue; Akismet ask that you purchase a commercial key which is only $5 a month.

Let’s see..

100,000 divided by $40 (what I’ve paid to date) = 0.0004 cents per spam intercepted.

As you can see, it’s 5 bucks a month well spent. I hate to think how much time (and consequently money) I would have spent manually weeding out 100k of spam posts.

So, in short – Thank you again Akismet!

  1. It is indeed a life saver, or blog saver rather! I have found i get even better results using it in combination with the bad behavior plugin which is quite successful in blocking the spam bots from even reaching the blog to lay their spammy footprints. On average i have found with the combination it blocks around 8000 per 100 or so comments left (which end up in the akismet spam comments)

  2. Thanks for the tip about the Bad Behavior plugin Greg, I’d seen it mentioned around the place but wasn’t sure what it actually did.. I’ll take a closer look. The plugin can be found here for anyone else who is interested:
