Convert snail mail to email

Posted by Michael Bloch in ecommerce (Sunday July 19, 2009 )

I’m continually amazed by the amount of snail mail we still get; so much of it would be better sent via email. For people who have had it with the piles of junk received via snail mail, there is a solution.

Services that will scan your snail mail and send it to you via email are gaining popularity. Like VoIP services such as Skype that can provide you with a phone number in different countries, these services also allow for a more seamless virtual office presence in different parts of the world.

You may be working from a garage in San Francisco, but you can have a post box in Europe, Australia and many other places; really giving your online business that “international company” feel. It helps get around some of the xenophobia that still exists today, even with the Internet having blurred borders a great deal in recent years.

One such service is Earth Class Mail. They provide you with an online PO box that gives you total control over your postal mail at the click of a button. You can open and scan, forward, recycle, shred or archive; without ever touching a piece of mail. For the mail you do wish to keep, it can be forwarded to your “real” snail mail address.

The company originally started offering virtual post boxes in the USA back in 2005, but recently added Switzerland and Germany; with addresses in Austria, France, and Italy to follow in the next couple of weeks.

There’s a very green aspect to these sorts of services too. According to Earth Class Mail, various studies report that the average person recycles perhaps 20% of their mail, while Earth Class Mail customers recycle more than 90% of their mail.
