More to shop online for Mothers Day

Posted by Michael Bloch in ecommerce (Thursday April 22, 2010 )

According to a recent survey, a healthy chunk of people plan to purchase their Mother’s Day gifts and Father’s Day gifts online this year.

The eBillme Online Spending Index, a quarterly survey conducted by Javelin Strategy & Research of 1,200 consumers, also found consumer spending over the next three months is projected to increase seven percent over Q1 to an average of $252.

Other key findings in relation to Mother’s Day specifically:

– 25 percent plan to shop online for gifts for Mom
– 57 percent want to purchase something other than flowers or chocolates for Mother’s Day this year.
– 10 percent plan to spend more on gifts for Father’s Day this year versus last year.

Marwan Forzley, President and CEO of eBillme sees the results as an optimistic sign for retailers after a couple of comparatively tough years in ecommerce land.

The interesting statistic is in relation to the types of gifts being sought – non-traditional items; so lots of opportunities there for marketers to think outside the box and turn items not traditionally associated with the day into Mother’s Day best sellers.

Given that Mothers are nurturers, I think it will also be a big year for “green” gifts; ones that have a strong connection to the environment – and I don’t mean steak – I’m talking more about sustainability; products with natural or recycled components.

Even with all the various gadgets and gizmos available these days, I think if my mother were alive today, she’d still just prefer a phone call and a hand-made card :).
